"Working in a museum" is not a single profession. Conservation, registration, education, communication, installation, IT, administration and visitor services may depend on competitive examinations, employment contracts, external companies, scholarships or internships.
Identify the institution
Distinguish between state, regional, municipal and university museums, consortia, foundations and private centres. The pathway and the employer vary. Do not submit the same CV without knowing who is hiring.
State museums
The Ministry of Culture indicates two basic pathways: civil servant status via competitive examination and staff contracts, usually via a competitive selection process. There are corps for Curators, Assistants and Auxiliaries for Archives, Libraries and Museums. The calls for applications establish the required qualifications, syllabus, tests and deadlines.
Other administrations
Regional governments, town councils, universities and consortia publish vacancies on their websites, in official gazettes and on employment portals. Also search by heritage, documentation, culture, education, archives, communication, systems and general services.
Scholarships
These are specialised training, not a structural position. Review the duration, funding, tutoring, incompatibilities and duties. Describe them correctly in your CV.
Internships
State museums require an agreement with the educational institution and the Ministry advises that the process must be initiated in advance. Check insurance, tutoring, hours and evaluation. They do not guarantee employment.
Volunteering
This has its own purpose and should not cover structural positions. Ask about duties, insurance, training and the person in charge. Do not present it as employment.
External contracting
Installation, security, mediation, design, technology, cleaning, transport or production may be outsourced. Review public procurement to identify contractors and monitor their processes.
Profiles
Relate your experience to conservation; registration and collections; research; education and mediation; exhibitions; communication; digitisation and systems; visitor services and accessibility; administration and contracting. Training depends on the position; no master's degree replaces formal requirements.
Reading a vacancy
Extract the employer, legal relationship, duties, requirements, merits, phases, tests, documentation and deadline. Distinguish between "required" and "desirable". Save the terms and conditions and annexes.
Preparing an application
Adapt your CV and tests to the duties. Document tools, languages, projects and results without inflating responsibilities. For competitive examinations, always use the official terms and syllabus.
