In the lodgepole pine forests of the Rocky Mountains, there are trees that keep their seeds under lock and key for decades. Their cones do not open upon maturing, as those of almost all pines do: they remain sealed by a hard resin, year after year, with the living seeds inside. They can spend twenty or thirty years like this, hanging from the branches, hermetic. What opens these cones is not time, nor humidity, nor wind. It is fire. When a wildfire sweeps through the forest and the temperature rises sufficiently, the resin softens, the cone opens, and it releases the seeds onto the ground, recently cleared and fertilised by the ashes. The tree has spent years waiting for the disaster that kills others.
This tree separates with rare clarity two things that we usually conflate. The seed can germinate from the first day: that capacity is in its structure long before the fire arrives. The fire does not give it the faculty to become a tree, because it already possessed it. It opens the door, creating the condition without which that capacity would never manifest. The capacity and its condition of appearance are distinct, and the pine keeps them separate: one inside the cone, the other outside, in the burning forest.
Fire only opens the cone; germination follows and depends on the seed landing in good soil, with moisture, and on it not having aged too much. Nor are all pines of the species so hermetic: the strategy varies. But the capacity is in the seed, and to become a tree it requires a chain of conditions that it does not contain.
With people, we conflate the same things. We say that someone 'has' talent, as if it were a substance stored within, complete and ready. And we say that when someone excels late, they have 'drawn it from the context', as if the context had manufactured it from nothing. Both phrases fail from opposite sides. Talent, like the seed, can be real and never manifest if the fire never arrives: the mentor, the tool, the free time, the opportunity. And when it finally appears, the context has not created it; it has opened the cone. It requires the coincidence of the seed and the fire.
Physics offers a more extreme case. Certain materials conduct electricity with normal resistance until they are cooled to temperatures near absolute zero: then, suddenly, they lose it completely and become superconductors. That capacity was written into their composition from the beginning, but it only appears in a regime of extreme cold that does not exist in nature. For millennia, an entire order of behaviour of matter was there, latent, without anyone being able to see it because the conditions never arose. By cooling it, we do not invent it: we allow it to appear.
The closed cone possesses something of patience and something of injustice. Of patience, because there are capacities that wait a long time, sometimes a whole lifetime, for the condition that releases them, and they are no less real while they wait. Of injustice, because if manifestation depends on conditions, the absence of conditions buries alive what exists. How many seeds never opened, not because they were infertile, but because their fire never arrived. Recognising that a capacity is real even if it does not manifest allows one to distinguish what does not exist from what has simply not had its occasion.
A tree that cannot grow is not the same as one that waits, closed, for the fire that has not yet come.

This text begins with a verified fact, the serotinous cones of the lodgepole pine that open with fire, to reflect upon the distinction between a real capacity and the conditions that manifest it. The conditions do not create the capacity; they release it; and a capacity can be fully real without ever manifesting. I distinguish the biological fact (fire opens the cone; germination depends on further factors) from the reflection it initiates, and I avoid thinking of talent as either an internal substance or as a pure product of context. If anyone wishes to intervene from the perspectives of biology, philosophy, or education, this notebook remains open.
